The OCEAN Quartet will bring the Washington College Riverfront Concert Series to a Celtic close on Thursday, July 25, on the Custom House lawn.

CHESTERTOWN, MD—The Celtic fusion band OCEAN will provide a rousing finish for the 2013 Washington College Riverfront Concert Series on Thursday, July 25. The free concert will take place at 6:30 p.m. on the lawn of the Custom House, corner of High and Water streets in Chestertown’s historic district.

Attendees should bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and picnic dinners; lemonade and cookies will be provided free of charge by the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience, which organizes and hosts the Concert Series. In case of inclement weather, concerts will take place in The Egg, a performance space in Hodson Hall Commons on the main Washington College campus.

OCEAN has earned more than 20 Washington Area Music Awards for its blend of Celtic, folk and folk-rock music—a mix that includes traditional instruments, shimmering electronics and hard-hitting rhythm. It has played to sold-out audiences at The Birchmere and The Kennedy Center, and the Washington Post has praised its performances as “nothing short of spellbinding.”

The group is led by composer/songwriter Jennifer Cutting, who plays electronic keyboard and accordion. A protégée of the English folk-revival pioneer A.L. “Bert” Lloyd, she created the electric folk band The New St. George and led it for more than a decade before starting OCEAN. The quartet also features acclaimed vocalist Lisa Moscatiello, whose voice Billboard magazine once described as “one of the most gorgeous instruments in all of folk-tinged pop.”

Launched by the Starr Center in 2010, the Riverfront Concert Series builds on the Center’s longstanding interest in the musical traditions of the Chesapeake Bay and its rich heritage of storytelling. Starr Center program manager Michael Buckley, whose Sunday morning program on Annapolis-based WRNR (103.1 FM) includes the interview series “Voices of the Chesapeake Bay,” serves as the series host.
