John Leupold, assistant professor of music, will premiere two compositions at the first 12@Hotchkiss Series on Friday Sept. 2 at noon.

The first 12@Hotchkiss concert of the 2016-17 academic year at Washington College will feature the world premiere of Assistant Professor of Music John Leupold’s pieces, “Threes on the Line” and “Quadridgeminal Deference.” The concert, on Friday Sept. 2 at noon, is in Hotchkiss Recital Hall at the Gibson Center for the Arts, and is free and open to the public.

The concert will feature four works, all composed by Leupold within the last two years. They are “Fragmentary Bibelot” for clarinet and bassoon, “Predestined Morphology” for solo drumset, “Threes on the Line” for harp and percussion, and “Quadridgeminal Deference” for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon.

The performers are all professional musicians based in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area, and Leupold will preface each work with a short explanation of its creative conception.

After the conclusion of the concert, there will be a short Q&A session with the performers.

Leupold holds a doctor of musical arts in composition from the University of Maryland, College Park, and two master of music degrees from Appalachian State University in music theory/composition and percussion performance. He has studied steel drum performance at the University of the West Indies and tabla performance with Pandit Sharda Sahai, and is the head of the Steel Band Ensemble at Washington College. His first CD, Exasperating Perpetuation, can be purchased via iTunes and Ravello Records. More information can be found at www.johnleupold.com.
