Poetry with Music at the Lit House June 24
CHESTERTOWN, MD—The Rose O’Neill Literary House at Washington College will welcome poets Jamaal May and Tarfia Faizullah, along with the music of Harp & Soul, on Tuesday, June 24, at 4:30 p.m. for the second of three events in the 2014 Summer Poetry Salon series. The afternoon salon will include poetry readings, live music and refreshments.
Jamaal May is the 2014 Cave Canem Fellow in summer residency at the Literary House. Cave Canem is the nation’s preeminent organization for young African American poets. It partners with Washington College to provide one outstanding former Cave Canem fellow a month-long residency in Chestertown each summer.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, May has taught poetry in the public schools and worked as an audio engineer. His first book, Hum (Alice James Books, 2013), received the American Library Association’s Notable Book Award and an NAACP Image Award nomination. His poems have appeared in such publications as The New Republic, Poetry, Ploughshares, NYTimes.com, and Best American Poetry 2014. He co-directs the Organic Weapon Arts Chapbook and Video Series with Faizullah.
Tarfia Faizullah is the author of Seam (SIU, 2014), winner of the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award. Her poems have appeared in American Poetry Review, The Southern Review, New England Review, Best New Poets 2013, Poetry Daily, and elsewhere. She lives in Detroit where she co-edits the Organic Weapon Arts Chapbook Press with May. In Fall 2014, she will join the University of Michigan Helen Zell Writers’ Program as the Nicholas Delbanco Visiting Professor in Poetry.
Harp & Soul offers an elegant mix of traditional music from the British Isles and beyond. Ensemble members are Meredith Hadaway (harp), Ben Bennington (guitar and vocals), Rebekah Hardy (oboe) and Bob Ortiz (percussion).
The Rose O’Neill Literary House at Washington College is located at 407 Washington Avenue. Its Summer Poetry Salons occur each year on the fourth Tuesday of May, June, and July.
