Coronavirus Communication 3/18/20

Dear Washington College Community,

As promised, we are providing a daily situation report on the coronavirus crisis. The Emergency Operations Group is monitoring the situation closely, meeting every day to discuss issues that affect campus operations and the health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff. Our responsibility is to provide a series of recommendations to the Senior Advisory Group about operations going forward. We hope to have a comprehensive plan of operation by the end of the week; this is where the situation stands now.  

 

COMMUNICATIONS/INFORMATION HUBS

Hotline

Given the uncertainty of a rapidly evolving situation, we have been fielding lots of questions from students, parents, faculty, staff, and members of the community. We hope that providing you with the most up-to-date information can allay some of those concerns. We have established a call center (Coronavirus Response Team at 410-778-7844) that will be manned between 8:30 and 4:30, beginning Friday morning. For any COVID-19 health-related questions, Maryland residents may call the Disaster Assistance Number, 211.

The Coronavirus Response Team is also monitoring a shared email box where you may pose questions. email: wcresponseteam@washcoll.edu

Website

College Communications is developing a microsite directly linked from the homepage www.washcoll.edu. This site, which is expected to go live by end of day Thursday, will aggregate all news and campus updates daily; a WAC Alert will go out at 4 p.m. every weekday to let members of the campus community know that new information is available.

Other Communications

If you have any COVID-19 related communication, resources, cancellations, or closings to share broadly with facult­y, staff, students, or parents, please send it directly to EOG’s Public Information Officers PIOs mlandskroener2@washcoll.edu and vsensenig@washcoll.edu. The information will be posted on the coronavirus site, and the PIOs will determine whether an email is also necessary.

 

STUDENTS

There is no change from the information you received earlier. Remote coursework will begin March 23, and we are asking students to vacate college housing by March 31.

 

STAFF

Consistent with our values, Washington College will treat employees in a fair and equitable manner in the midst of a difficult situation.

All staff members must work from home beginning March 23, unless their supervisors demonstrate to the EOG that they are critical to on-campus operations. For those of you working from home, please become familiar with Microsoft Teams and Zoom teleconferencing software. You should also have received instructions for transferring your office line to your home phone or cell, which you must do from your office phone (See below)

We recognize that this “new normal” is deeply unsettling. While there are certainly legitimate concerns over COVID-19, there is no need to panic. Remain calm, and become a homebody as much as you can. What we do at this moment in our national history—or what we choose not to do—can save lives.
