February 02, 2018

On Friday, February 2nd, Natalie Diaz ended her visit to Washington College with a TEXTaural Workshop. The workshop was a fresh and unconventional experience because of its focus on utilizing one’s sense of hearing, sight, and touch to fuel the writing process.

For Diaz’s first exercise, she gave every participant a blindfold to limit what she considered our primary and more relied on sense, sight. Then, she read Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s poem, “Song,” multiple times. An open-forum discussion followed each reading, where Diaz and participants talked about what was working within the poem and how images connected across the piece (with the blindfolds still on).

The next set of exercises utilized touch and hearing: participants were equipped with drawing supplies, including paper, charcoal, and pastels. Participants were then asked to sketch what they felt while music played. Certain restrictions were established, such as using a pastel color to highlight a particular point in the drawing, but the main objective was to get participants to freely express their feelings on paper.
