Annual student dance showcase

The Department of Theatre and Dance premiered their winter showcase; Dancescape, a collaborative dance project featuring the artistic works of students, faculty, and alumni. Making a special appearance was the Baltimore Dance Project which performed Carol Hess’s Lightforest. Lightforest combines not only music and dance, but technology, photography, and the natural environment.

The Artistic Director, Professor A.T. Moffet, spoke of the creative diversity within the show, which featured “dances that [were] highly virtuosic and [had] great partnering work. One piece [addressed] violence in our society and its impact on mothers. There [were] also light-hearted, Broadway style dances …Lightforest …[had] beautiful images … projected onto screens as well as the dancers’ bodies. The dancers [wore] bluetooth devices that allow[ed] the music to travel with them as they [flew] across the stage.”

Dancescape, in addition to being the Theatre and Dance Department’s annual student showcase, provided valuable experience for the fellow dancers, alumni, and guests. Dancer Caitlyn Creasy ’20, said, “[D]ancing at WAC is so rewarding … We are exposed to so many opportunities through the dance program …The [Dancescape] process taught me so much and I’m so thankful that I could take part in it. From the minute we auditioned, we were surrounded by people who were nothing but supportive and loving and kind.”

For Cassandra Sottile ’21, Dancescape was a successful first foray into stage managing at Washington College. She said, “It was a great first stage managing experience. It was a little interesting at first because it was only half our show, and half LightForest …My favorite thing … was Wednesday night in our tech week because it was the first time we ran the whole show together, and I got to see everyone’s hard work come to life, and facilitate the continuation of the show in the run.”
