Connor Lugo-Harris’s Senior Directing Thesis, written by Lorraine Hansberry

Connor Lugo-Harris’s senior Directing Thesis, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, opened in Tawes Theatre and ran for two days. A Raisin in the Sun focuses on race, family, identity, and dreams. It follows the Younger family’s day-to-day activities and arguments as they wait for a life-changing sum of money to arrive.

Director Connor Lugo-Harris said about his journey in putting on the play, “I remember wanting to be able to do something [about the black experience] but … when I was a freshman, we couldn’t have done that, because the population of black students at the school was just not big enough.” He chose A Raisin in the Sun, “the one [play] that stuck out to me…There’s something about it that’s so iconic …. It’s well-written, and it has a lot of these themes that I really liked.”

“The process [of putting on A Raisin in the Sun] was not easy.” Said Lugo-Harris. “I was worried about … finding people to audition ….. [M]ost of my cast ended up being people who’d never acted before, or hadn’t acted at the school.” Because of this, the time constraint, and difficulty of the script, Lugo-Harris was advised by the Theatre Department to turn the production into a staged reading. “I think that in a lot of ways, because I [didn’t] have to worry about [other design elements], it gave me the freedom to focus on the acting. … [That] really allowed me to focus on creating these deep relationships[, and the] story was able to come through a lot clearer because it wasn’t … sullied up by other, extra elements.”

Of the production process, Stage Manager Noel Roundtree-Vargas ’21, said, “[W]e worked on bits and pieces of each act, … called actors individually to work on monologues and help with accents and pronunciations …. What I liked about working in the production was meeting the actors and the creative team … [T]he production went very well, we have worked very hard to accomplish the tone of the story… [A Raisin in the Sun] was something not yet done in Washington College and I was glad to be [a part] of it.”

Audience-member Maria Betancur-Cardona ’20, said, “[The] staged reading … was pretty cool to see. I was amazed by the talent of the cast as they were still able to convey so much emotion and pull the audience into their world. One thing that really stood out to me was when the actors slammed their feet on stage to mimic the sound of a slap, it was awesome!”

Fellow viewer Andrew Darlington ’19 said about his experience, “A Raisin in the Sun was a very great play with a very serious subject matter. As a result, I was amazed that the play had such funny moments … I think it speaks to the amazing talent of the performers that they were able to make the audience laugh despite discussing serious issues of race and family strife.”
