Emily Cao’s Senior Directing Thesis, written by David Henry Hwang

Emily Cao’s senior Directing Thesis Yellow Face, by David Henry Hwang, opened in Tawes Theatre and ran for two days. Yellow Face deals deeply with race, identity, and the relationship between the media and politics. It is semi-autobiographical, and revolves around the character-Hwang (DHH) mistakenly casting a Caucasian man for a role as an Asian man in his upcoming play.

Emily Cao ’18, chose Yellow face as her Directing Thesis “because this … play talks about [China,] … America[,] …. race … and identity. I really want to talk about this because I think race still matter[s] in America, now, and because I’m an international [student] from China, and I … suffer [from] racism, so I … want to make others feel that power, and make adjustments for … ending [this] narrative in American society.”

Will Rotsch ’21, who played Marcus G. Dahlman, said, “[A] lot of us were freshmen, so there [were] a lot of new ideas coming into the program, and we were able to make a show that was … uniquely our own, … not influenced by other things in the community, but just what we saw as what needed to be in the show. …. There were some great jokes in there, and … being able to explore those ideas [in Yellow Face] was both hilarious and … thought-provoking.”

Audience member Mahin Zaman ’21 said, “I loved [Yellow Face]… I thought it was interesting how they portrayed Asian Americans as actual people, and … pointed out the fact that there is still is discrimination against Asian people.”
