Written by George Bernard Shaw and directed by Professor Brendon Fox.

Major Barbra, written by George Bernard Shaw and directed by Professor Brendon Fox, opened in Decker Theatre, rearranged to feature an elevated dais centerstage on which the action took place. The audience was seated on risers surrounding the dais for a more intimate theatrical experience. Originally set in the early 1900’s, this interpretation of Major Barbara was set in present day. The play follows the wealthy Undershaft family as they try to reconcile their morals with the fact that their money is made through the production of weapons.

Of the play, Professor Fox said, “I love plays by George Bernard Shaw… I think that even though he wrote this play over a hundred years ago, [it’s] still really timely.” Professor Fox referenced the variety of relevant issues the play tackles such as “issues of money and power and spirituality, and how do you do good in the world, and is there such thing as … completely pure motivations,” issues that “still haven’t been solved.” Professor Fox also appreciated how Shaw “writes really strong female characters.”

As for the stage direction of the play, Professor Fox was interested “in updating the design, …finding the ways that the set and costume and music could be updated without really changing the text.” He referred to this process as “an experiment… to show the relevance of [the play] even more.” Professor Fox particularly wanted to “do a Shaw play” because of Shaw’s ability to represent “characters honestly and passionately exchanging ideas, not talking at each other, but … to each other.” Professor Fox found this important currently, because he “feel[s] like we’re in a moment … where there’s a lot of shouting people down and not a lot of actual listening…that’s what happens in Shaw’s plays. He’s not interested in [one] point of view, he’s interested in letting the audience see multiple ideas. … That’s why having it in the round was fun, … there was no one perspective to view the play, literally.”
