Inside the Home of “The Butler”

December 13, 2017

Students associated with the College’s Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience enjoyed a field trip to the home of White House butler Eugene Allen.

Wil Haygood, the Washington Post journalist whose article about longtime White House staffer Eugene Allen inspired the 2013 movie, The Butler, is the 2017-18 Patrick Henry Fellow at Washington College. This fall, Haygood arranged to take a group of students to visit the late Eugene Allen’s home, where historic keepsakes from eight American presidencies are on display.  The students, greeted by Gene Allen’s son Charles, were particularly interested in Allen’s relationships with the First Families over the course of his 34-year career, and his insider’s perspective on civil rights history.
