Yellow Face by David Henry Hwang
A Senior Directing Thesis from Emily Cao
October 27-28

David Henry Hwang’s play Yellow Face employs a broken, nonlinear narrative that blurs the line between fact and fiction. When the character DHH gets embroiled in a controversy regarding casting – in two of his plays – he is forced to confront questions of identity that date back to his family’s immigration to the United States. Yellow Face uses humor as it seeks to answer the question, “To what extent do we perform race, either onstage or off?”
