The Student Events Board hosted the Smartest Major competition in the Egg. Student teams from Business Management, Chemistry, Economics, and Philosophy competed for a $500 to be awarded to the club of their choice.
Jim Keady, the activist behind the Nike accountability campaign Team Sweat, spoke to students about his efforts to improve working conditions and wages for factory workers in an interactive multimedia event.
“Ahhhh, Strontium!”Pyrotechnics expert John Conking ‘65, an adjunct professor of chemistry, offered a talk on the Chemistry of Fireworks Saturday afternoon. Professor Conkling explained the chemical compounds and methods used to produce the various colors and special effects of fireworks displays.Conkling and Chris Mocella ‘01, a chemist with US Customs & Border Protection, collaborated on the second edition of Conkling’s book, The Chemistry of Fireworks, published in January 2011. The lecture was part of the College’s celebration of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry.
Thomas M. Connelly, Jr., Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer of E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company, spoke on “Hard Facts and Soft Skills for the Innovator of Tomorrow” as part of the J. C. Jones Seminar in American Business and the opening to the year-long celebration of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry.
