Ethics in Crisis: The Threat to the Government Ethics Program and the Path Forward

Washington College’s The Holstein Program in Ethics at Washington College will host Walter Shaub, former Director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics

The United States has gone from being the gold standard for government ethics internationally to a laughingstock virtually overnight. So says Walter Shaub, the former Director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics who resigned last year in protest over what he has described as an ethics crisis in the federal government. What exactly has gone wrong, and how do we fix it? Mr. Shaub will discuss the problem now facing the government’s ethics program, which he argues is the proverbial “canary in the coalmine” portending even bigger problems to come if left unaddressed. He will also offer his proposals for stemming the erosion of ethics in government.
