In Search of Jewish England, talk by Dr. Gary Schiff

In the slide/lecture “In Search of Jewish England”, Dr. Gary Schiff, Washington College Adjunct Professor of History, explores the thousand-year old history of the Jews of England. Invited into the country by William the Conqueror in 1066, Jews settled not only in London but in such medieval cathedral cities as Norwich, Lincoln, and York, and in the university town of Oxford. Expelled in 1290 they returned in the 1650’s and re-settled in London and in such industrial cities as Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool. Professor Schiff will illustrate the great diversity of English Jewry, visiting both the urban mansions, country estates and grand synagogues of its upper class, like the Rothschilds and Montefiores, as well as the gritty working class sections of the East End of London and similar quarters in Manchester.
