Dai Shihan (Grand Master) Michael Chikuzen Gould, Shakuhachi

As part of its 2016-2017 Premier Artists lineup, The Concert Series presents Dai Shihan (Grand Master) Micheal Chikuzen Gould.  This event is co-sponsored by the Global Education Office, the William James Forum, and the Department of Philosophy and Religion. As one of only a handful of non-Japanese to hold the title of “Dai Shihan,” Chiukuzen will perform the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese 5-holed flute. Advance Tickets are available through Eventbrite.

Michael Chikuzen Gould studied the Shakuhachi (Zen Bamboo flute) in Japan for 15 years under renowned masters Mr. Yokoyam Katsuya and Mr. Taniguchi Yoshinobu. He earned the title of Dai-Shihan or Grand Master in 1995. He returned in 1998 to teach at Wittenberg University and the University of Michigan. Gould is currently based in Cody, Wyoming where he teaches privately when he’s not touring. Gould has published several CDs and instructional books for teaching shakuhachi. On his latest CD he is accompanied by Buddhist Shomyo chanting. More about Gould is available on his website.

Individual tickets are $20 (adults) and $15 (non-WC College Students / Seniors over age 65 / WC faculty & staff). WC students and youth 18 and under are free. Individual tickets can be purchased online with a credit card via EventBrite, or with cash or check at the door. Season tickets can be purchased on the Concert Series website.
