Join us on an exciting and scenic four-day sailing adventure aboard the 18th-century Royal Navy schooner HMS Sultana.

Every August, the Starr Center hosts a group of dauntless mariners – a.k.a., Washington College first-year students - for a sail through history aboard the 1768 Schooner Sultana, pride of the Chester River. Students will experience the rich history, natural beauty, and unique environment of the Chesapeake Bay region.

At the beginning of the academic year, the Starr Center offers a four-day pre-orientation sail on the 18th-century Chesapeake Bay schooner Sultana. Participants help sail a tall ship while learning about the Bay’s estuarine ecosystem and rich history. There’s also time to play 18th-century baseball, and fight an epic water-gun battle on Langford Creek. The Sultana is a 97-foot replica of a British vessel that patrolled the Chesapeake before the American Revolution. During a 30-mile voyage down the beautiful Chester River, participants will learn to steer and sail the ship, and observe wildlife.

In the evenings, Sultana will dock at historic waterfront estates for cookouts and games with Washington College students and faculty, sunset canoe expeditions, and opportunities for swimming and relaxing. Eighteenth-century baseball, and enjoy live Eastern Shore music. Then, get ready to face off in an epic naval battle with canoes, Super Soakers, and fierce hand-to-hand combat between the Royal Navy and Buccaneers! will sleep aboard the ship or in tents near the water. The program is geared toward students with an interest in history, American studies, and the environment. Although all are welcome to participate.
