Washington College’s Center for Environment & Society, in conjunction with YMOS is pleased to announce the Maryland Birds: Ecology & Conservation summer program for 2019.  The residential program will run from June 24-27, 2019 and be based out of Washington College in Chestertown, MD. Participants, through intensive field trips to a variety of habitats, will learn how to:

• identify birds by sight and sound,
• recognize and document breeding bird behavior for atlasing
• collect data for research purposes
• explore career options relating to wildlife, and
• contribute to bird conservation activities

During the week, participants will work in the field and the classroom with trained ornithologists and researchers.  Our trips will focus on various habitat types, such as eastern deciduous forests at Susquehanna State Park, marshes at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, grasslands at Washington College’s River and Field Campus, rivers, and more.  Binoculars will be provided for those who need them.

 

The program is open to students entering grades 10-12, and previous birding experience is unnecessary if participants have a strong interest in the outdoors and nature. This will be a small group (maximum of 13 students).  Leaders are Washington College Field Ecologists Maren Gimpel and Dan Small, Dr. Wayne Bell, and YMOS Coordinator George Radcliffe.  

 

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A CAMP.  This is a rigorous educational program for students interested in birds and the environment.  We will have long days in the field, starting before dawn and evening lectures.
