Going down! Despite some optimistic paddling, one boat is destined for the Chester River bottom.

CHESTERTOWN, MD–A highlight of Fall Family Weekend at Washington College, the Chester River Waterfront Festival will fill Wilmer Park with fun, food and educational displays this Saturday, Sept. 21, from noon to 4 p.m.  On tap along with the infamous Cardboard Boat Regatta are river cruises aboard the 46-foot Callinectes, sailing, kayaking and canoeing on the Chester River, good food and family fun, exhibits on watershed ecology, pony rides, and live music by the Michael Butler Band. Sponsored by the Center for Environment & Society at Washington College, the Festival is free and open to the public.

The 7th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in front of the Leila Hynson Pavilion. All boats go on display at noon, captains meet with race officials at 2:30 p.m., and the popular boat parade to the river’s edge begins at 2:45 p.m.

There are prizes worth a combined $650 at stake, as well as bragging rights. Even the sinkers can qualify for the Titanic Award or the People’s Choice Award.

The regatta is open to individuals, businesses, schools, civic groups and non-profit entities in Kent or Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. Participants must be at least 12 years of age. Information on how to register and how to build a boat that floats is found on the Center’s website, http://www.washcoll.edu/centers/ces or by contacting festival coordinator Katherine Thornton at 410-810-7162, kthornton2@washcoll.edu

The 2014 Chester River Waterfront Festival is slated for September. It’s never too early to start designing that cardboard dream boat!

Skeleton Crew and WAC Swimming pass near the halfway mark of the race.

The CES boat, Journey One, races in for a second place finish in 2012.
