The Washington College Western Team competes in approximately ten Zone 3, Region 5 IHSA shows each semester. The Western shows are usually “double shows,” which means two shows are packed into one day. For the Western classes, the levels range from Beginner walk/jog all the way up to Open Reining and Horsemanship for the more experienced riders. Lessons are required if you are showing with at least one lesson the week of a show, and two lessons the week of the first show of the season.
The Team provides an excellent outlet for riders who have ridden all of their lives and want to continue in college, or those who have never ridden before but are interested in learning the sport. Riders of all abilities - and those who have never ridden before! - are welcome and encouraged to join. Several members are either on the English Team as well, or started riding English style but now show Western. It’s not hard to “convert,” and most say Western riding is just as much fun and a great experience! If you have any questions regarding the Western Team or Western shows, feel free to email Tori Alpaugh, the Western Team captain.
