Starr Center for the


Study of the American Experience

The Starr Center funds a number of paid student internships and positions throughout the year with the mission of providing students with experiential and integrated learning opportunities that bolster both academic experiences and professional development. The internship program seeks to offer students a clear and tangible pathway toward advancement outside the class room, providing opportunities and incentives for students to participate in skills-training, professional development, and leadership activities. During the summer, students have opportunities through our Explore America Summer Internship program to work at some of the nation’s leading cultural institutions.

Fall 2018 Offerings

Custom House Research and Interpretation Internship - Interns will be expected to lead tours of the 18th century Custom House and Chestertown’s historic waterfront district, as well as to develop their own historical materials and narratives to add to pre-existing tour scripts. Interns will work as part of a team to develop an exhibition linking the historic, cultural, and architectural significance of the building to broader themes in American history and culture.  

 Custom House Research and Interpretation Team Leader Paid Internship – Team leaders will work closely with staff to collect training materials and primary sources for use during tours, train and supervise new tour guides, and work with new guides to learn the history of the Custom House and develop their own themed walking tour of the house and nearby locales. Additionally, team leaders will coordinate and oversee the various stages of exhibition development.

Library Manager/Office Assistant - This student employee will organize and curate several exciting book collections and archives, as well as assist the Center Coordinator with promotional research and administrative duties.

Media and Marketing Assistant - The student will market and promote Starr Center positions, events, and programs online, on campus, and in the community.

Photography, Videography, and Social Media Paid Internship - The intern will photograph and/or video Starr Center students at work, as well as Starr Center events and programs on campus and across town. They will be expected to attend Starr Center events, photograph events and programs as assigned, edit images, create and post photos/videos on the Starr Center’s web page and various digital interfaces, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LiveWhale.

StoryQuest WWII Homefront Paid Internship - The Community Outreach Intern will play a key role in developing partnerships for the StoryQuest Program’s World War II Oral History Project, which has received a one-year grant to seed new interview collection efforts nationwide.

StoryQuest WWII Oral Historian Paid Internship - These interns will collect, process, and archive oral history interviews; develop content for and design spaces within storyquestproject.com; and train new oral historians in Story Quest’s best practices and methods.
