Red SwirlGeorge Washington’s 50 Guinea Draft

Once Dr. Smith obtained the Washington College charter, he embarked upon an ambitious fund raising campaign.  His old friend, General George Washington, allowed the college to be named in his honor, accepted a place on the Board of Visitors and Governors, and generously donated fifty guineas  “as an earnest of my wishes for the prosperity of this seminary.”
