Rock Climbing

Earth Treks Indoor Climbing Center, located in Columbia Maryland is a state-of the-art indoor climbing gym, among the largest in the country. Earth Treks offers over 15,000 square feet of climbing. Climbing for all ability levels, from fun beginner climbs to fiercely technical sport climbs. Over 150 climbs on varied terrain: from 23 ft.tall slabs to 50 ft. overhangs. Several day trips are taken throughout the school year.

Eastern Neck Island

The Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge (ENNWR), administered by the US Fish & Wildlife Service, is a 2285 acre major feeding and resting place for migratory and wintering waterfowl at the mouth of the Chester River in Kent County, Maryland on Maryland’s “Eastern Shore”. It offers unsurpassed opportunity to bird watchers. It has six miles of roads and trails open for hiking most of the year.

Blackwater Refuge

Blackwater Refuge is located on Maryland’s scenic Eastern Shore, just 12 miles south of Cambridge. The refuge consists of over 27,000 acres of freshwater impoundments, brackish tidal wetlands, open fields, mixed evergreen and deciduous forests. Blackwater Refuge offers several bike routes for the novice to experienced biker. Cyclists can choose to complete an approximate 4-mile or 7-mile-loop route along the paved Wildlife Drive. Blackwater also has a 20-mile and 25-mile route that runs along county roads through the varied habitats of the Refuge.

Cycling Trip to Cliff City

Cliffs Schoolhouse is an architectural landmark that served as farming and fishing community in rural Kent County, and has survived for over 125 years. Lesson plans, for the seven grades taught in the one room, are written on the blackboards by the last teacher. It is well equipped with many of its original furnishings. Beginning at the College Boathouse and following Quaker Neck Road it is approximately a twenty mile bike with breathtaking views and scenery.

Betterton Beach

This 5 acre landscaped, family oriented waterfront park is the largest of two public beaches in the county on the Chesapeake Bay. (The other is in Rock Hall). The exceptional sandy beach has 300 feet of frontage for swimming and 700 feet of shoreline access. It is equipped with a bathhouse with public restrooms and 500 feet of boardwalk, with benches, lighting and handicap access. Students can enjoy the sand and sun just twenty miles from the college.

Overnight Trips

White Water Rafting

Excitement for everyone from the novice to the white water veteran. Washington College offers several overnight trips a year to several different rivers in MD, PA, and VA. This fall students traveled to Seven Springs P.A. to experience the Lower Youghiogheny in Ohiopyle, PA The Lower’s Class III and IV rapids challenged and excited the students. Keep your eyes open for more trips like this one!


Winter Skiing

Every winter students enjoy several overnight skiing trips into western Maryland and Pennsylvania. Last winter student traveled to Seven Springs Mountain Resort, voted the best Mid-Atlantic Resort by Ski Magazine. Previous years students have traveled to Wisp and Ski Liberty, mountains located in western Maryland.


 Crabbing and Fishing Charters

Enjoy the taste of Maryland Blue Crabs? During the early fall Washington College Recreation department offers crabbing trips that allow student to catch and enjoy the taste of Maryland seafood. Fishing Charters are also offered- Students can fish in the river for salt water Cat fish, Perch, or Spot. Bigger charters are taken out in the bay during the big Rockfish season.
