Faculty Positions

Assistant Professor of Music Theory (11/02/11)

The Department of Music at Washington College invites applications for a tenure-track position in Music Theory/Composition at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2012. Washington College is a competitive, four-year liberal arts college of 1450 students, located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay. Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia are within 90 minutes of the college. The Music Department is housed in the newly renovated and expanded Daniel Z. Gibson Center for the Arts, completed in fall 2009. For further information, please visit college website and the department website. The requirements of the position include teaching a four-semester theory sequence, upper level theory/compositions courses, and departmental electives; directing student ensembles (i.e. Vocal Consort, Chorus, Chamber Groups, etc.); and advising senior capstones. Normal teaching load at the college is three courses per term, with ensembles counting as a half course.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in Music Theory or D.M.A. in Composition by the beginning of the appointment, be a creative and engaging teacher, and have the potential for outstanding scholarship. The candidate should be an accomplished performer on his/her primary instrument/voice, be able to accompany students on piano, have experience working with both majors and non-majors, and demonstrate a strong commitment to liberal arts education. It is desirable that candidates have experience conducting/coaching ensembles. Preference will be given to vocalists or reed players.

Assistant or Associate Professor of Studio Art (10/19/11)

About Washington College: Washington College, founded in 1782, is a selective liberal arts institution of 1450 students that emphasizes excellence in teaching and a commitment to scholarly research. It is located on Maryland's Eastern Shore, about 90 minutes from Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

Position Description: The Department of Art and Art History at Washington College invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant or associate professor in studio art. The successful candidate will play a key role in a small, dynamic department that encourages a wide range of student work, built on strong visual, critical, and interdisciplinary foundations. He or she will have a broad understanding of the contemporary artistic landscape and will emphasize the theoretical and conceptual elements of art making in his or her teaching, consistent with the mission of a liberal arts college.

Teaching duties (three courses/semester) include foundations courses that approach art and design from a broad perspective and upper-level courses in areas of the selected candidate's interest which could include environmental and/or public art, installation, interactive or performance art, and/or digital strategies. Supervision of senior theses or projects, participation in mounting an annual student art show, contribution to bringing artists, critics or exhibitions to campus and scholarly research or ongoing artistic expression and exhibition are also required. In 2009 Washington College opened a 1,200 square foot state of the art gallery and the candidate selected for this position will be actively engaged in contributing to the future direction of the gallery. Recent grants to the department from the Davenport Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation have supported the department's teaching and the gallery's programming.

An M.F.A, strong exhibition and professional record, and experience in college-level teaching are required. Administrative experience, such as department chair or program director, is highly desirable.

Teaching Fellow in the Department of Economics (12/21/11)

A Teaching Fellow position renewable up to three years is available in the Economics Department at Washington College, starting in August 2012. The teaching load is 3 courses per semester for a total of 6 courses per year. Three of these 6 courses (2 preparations) will be first- year GRW seminars that are open to students of any major, have a global focus, and emphasize development of skills in research, writing and presentation. Teaching Fellow in the Department of English (12/21/11)

The Washington College English Department invites applications for appointment as Teaching Fellow with expertise and experience teaching first-year writing. Ph.D. in English, Rhetoric/Composition, Comparative Literature, or Creative Writing by August 2012 required; evidence of teaching excellence on the college level and potential for publication are expected. Teaching Fellows will garner valuable faculty experience in the life of a nationally recognized, small liberal arts college, serving as an academic adviser to a small group of students, while also participating in the development of the first-year writing program and in the work of the English department on a campus where the literary arts thrive. Teaching Fellows will participate in the first-year faculty mentoring program, receive special training for advising, and be eligible for other faculty development opportunities. The successful candidate will have experience and demonstrated commitment to teaching writing as well as interest in teaching and mentoring students in a residential, liberal arts college environment. Teaching Fellow in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology (12/15/11)

Washington College invites applications for a three-year teaching fellow position in the department of Sociology and Anthropology beginning in August 2012. Duties include teaching three Global Research and Writing (GRW) courses per year, and three one hundred level courses in Anthropology per year. Additional duties include academic advising of undergraduates, and the potential to teach an occasional upper-level Anthropology course. Ph.D. in Anthropology by August 2012 is required. Subfield specialization and geographic area are open. Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence and commitment to training and professional development of undergraduates in research and writing are required.

We seek a dynamic and energetic anthropologist/archaeologist with a broad background in anthropology who can contribute to two important components of our first-year experience. The teaching fellow will develop at least two innovative GRW courses in a "global" area of specialization with a focus on training first-year students in research, writing and presentation. Director, Math/Quantitative Skills Center (11/28/11)

The Director of the Math/Quantitative Skills Center supervises tutors for mathematics courses and courses requiring quantitative skills, works with course mentors (supplemental instruction) assigned to such courses and works with faculty to develop workshops and other programs to support mathematics courses and other courses requiring quantitative skills. The Director reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Services and works closely with faculty and other Academic Resources Directors. This is a ten-month staff position.

Depending on qualifications and subject to approval of the chair of the relevant department, the Director may also teach one or two established courses/year in math or another subject with quantitative content.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and supervise student tutors for one-on-one and small group tutoring in math and quantitative skills and course mentors assigned to such courses for supplemental instruction.
  • Work with faculty to develop materials and offer workshops for students to review fundamental mathematics or quantitative skills for courses such as physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, computer science, economics and business and to review or learn technology and software pertaining to mathematics and quantitative skills.
  • Manage tutor schedules, payroll and budget for the Math/Quantitative Skills Center. Collect, analyze and report outcomes assessment data.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or closely related field required, master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience teaching mathematics or a related subject in a school, college or university, experience training and supervising student tutors preferred.
  • Experience with academic technology and software pertaining to mathematics and related courses.

The successful candidate will manage the George Washington Society, Washington College’s legacy giving society, and the larger legacy giving program including educating all interested constituencies about legacy gift opportunities; marketing legacy gift opportunities to targeted audiences through mail, personal visits, and education programs; working with donors’ advisors and legacy gift managers to ensure optimal performance of deferred gift assets; staying current on legacy giving vehicles, tax laws, and gift implications; and assisting development officers, the Vice President and the President in proposing, structuring and closing complex gifts of assets, both outright and deferred.

As a valued member of a team of nineteen, the Legacy Giving Officer will participate in strategy and planning and will be called upon to contribute ideas and counsel. As a fundraiser for Washington College, this professional has the ability to impact directly the lives of Washington College students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Ideal candidates will have 3-5 years of legacy or major gift fundraising experience or experience in serving as a representative of an institution with success in conducting face-to-face solicitations in a college, university or academic medical setting. Travel is required.

The Provost and Dean of the College is the chief academic officer of the College and provides intellectual leadership and support for all academic departments and multi-disciplinary programs. The Provost and Dean of the College plays a central role in faculty recruitment, promotion, retention, and continuing professional development and works closely with the President and other members of the College's senior staff on budgetary, academic, strategic planning, and educational policy issues. The ideal Provost and Dean of the College will have a strong grasp of the pedagogical, technological, economic, and social challenges and opportunities currently facing liberal arts colleges and a clearly articulated vision for the future of liberal arts education. Technical Services Lead Technician (12/08/11)

Responsibilities:
This positions works directly with the Director of Client Support and Technical Services to provide IT support for the Washington College community. This position is directly responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of all college owned computers. The Lead Technician is responsible for researching, evaluating, and conducting a cost analysis of tools that have the potential to benefit Washington College.

The position takes the lead on special projects and provides direction for work produced by fellow Technical Services Technicians. The Lead Technician assumes the role of project leader when the assistance of other technicians is required. This includes ensuring that the team successfully evaluates and implements the phases of the project.

In the absence of the Director of Client Support and Tech Services the Lead Technician is responsible for the overall operation of the repair shop.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in electronics and/or computer systems troubleshooting required.

Experience and Background:

  • At least 3 years experience in the IT field with computer repair
  • Possess or be able to obtain Apple, Lenovo and A+ Certifications
  • Experience in Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems
  • Experience with job related software, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet browsers, email clients, backup software, and imaging software
  • Demonstrated experience leading small and large team projects
  • Experience in documentation and writing reports
