Classmates Remember Petra
by Laleh Malek Srnec 90
On the evening of September 2, 1998, Swissair Flight 111 en route from New York to Geneva plunged into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Nova Scotia, killing all 229 souls on board. Among those lost was Petra Fajerson Wilcox, Class of 1991.
As I think about this tragedy I am reminded of a quote which I can, at best, roughly paraphrase. The quote says something to the effect that our actions in life live long beyond our existence on this earth. The truth of this is evident each December, when alumni return to campus to honor Petras memory with a gesture of giving. Classmates, Alpha Chi sisters and friends have established the Petra Fajerson Wilcox Memorial Fund that provides a Christmas for local children in need. Last December, so many alumni who wanted the spirit, actions and love of Petra to live beyond her existence on this earth were rewarded when they looked into the eyes of any one of those 15 children who would not otherwise have had a Christmas. To everyone involved, thank you.
The third annual Christmas party, sponsored jointly by the Alpha Chi Omega sorority and the Phi Delta fraternity in honor of Petra, is scheduled for December 1 in Cecil Hall. Anyone interested in contributing to the Petra Fajerson Wilcox Memorial Fund for this annual tribute may contact Laleh Malek Srnec at lalehs@aol.com or at 410-453-9269.
