In Memoriam: Robert W. Lipsitz '54
Robert W. Lipsitz '54 died May 14, 2005 in Baltimore. During his undergraduate years, Bob was an economics major and a member of the Theta Chi fraternity.
As a lacrosse attackman, Bob scored a total of 85 goals and was a member of the '54 co-championship team. He was voted into the College's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. After graduation, Bob served in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.
He earned his law degree in 1963 from the University of Baltimore Law School and was a Program Analyst for the Department of Defense from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. As an alumnus, Bob served as his Reunion Class Chair and Class Agent for many years.
He was also the 1950s Decade Representative to the Alumni Council, Second Vice President, Vice President and then President of the Alumni Association from 1990 to 1992. After serving two years as Past President, Bob was voted an Emeritus Member of the Alumni Association, a position he held until his death. Bill and Emily Dryden Russell '53 '56, lifelong friends, said, "Bobby was one of WC's best ambassadors ever. Whenever he traveled, he phoned or tried to see former teammates or college friends. He sent notes and greeting cards, took photographs and mailed copies, and passed along news to the College. He had, and exercised, a unique gift for friendship and loyalty to WC. He very much enjoyed his Alumni Council career and was an active past president. He will be remembered with affection."
Dorothy Simmons Robinson '31 died August 16, 2004 in Lewes, DE. She was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church, where she was in the ladies circle. She also taught special education for many years. Her husband, Oliver Robinson '32, died in 2002. She is survived by a son, Oliver Robinson II '60.
Gertrude Chaney Howard '33 passed away March 15, 2005. She was a long-time employee of the Equitable Trust Bank & Co.
Ellis Charles Dwyer '35 died January 6, 2005. While at WC, Ellis played four years of varsity football and served as captain of the 1934 undefeated team. He was inducted into the WC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987. After graduation, he returned to Radnor, PA, where he taught math and coached football, basketball and baseball at Chester High School. He moved on to Radnor High School in 1943 where he taught math, coached basketball and golf and was an assistant football coach. In his 31 years at Radnor, he coached the basketball team to 524 victories, 12 league titles and the state championship title in 1960.
Leland B. Stevens '35 died February 20, 2005.
Fred Peyser '36 died December 11, 2004.
Charlotte Shaull Blevins '40 died January 5, 2005. After graduation, Charlotte served as an aide at a Coast Guard Hospital in New York. She was later an assistant at Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University. After raising her family, she received her master's degree at the University of Maryland in microbiology. She conducted cancer research at NIH in the 1970s and 1980s. Charlotte was active in the Silver Spring YMCA and PTA and led Girl Scout and Cub Scout groups. She is survived by her husband, John Blevins '39.
Robert Hitch, Jr. '43 died March 7, 2005. He was a mechanical engineer for the DuPont Company at the Edgemoor Plant for 40 years, retiring in 1980. He served in the Air Force during WWII. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and a steam railroad enthusiast.
Ralph T. Gies '48 died July 30, 2004 in Gambrills, MD. After attending WC, Ralph graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in accounting. He began his career as a management internist at Hutzler's Department Store. He later worked in computer systems for USF&G and the Department of Labor. Ralph was active in The Holy Name Society as president and received recognition from the Knights of Columbus.
Bill Murray '53 died February 1, 2005. Bill started working for the Potomac Electric Company soon after graduation and retired in January 2005. He also volunteered at the Information Desk on Thursday mornings at the Smithsonian's American History Museum in Washington, DC.
Roy R. Jones '58 died January 3, 2005 in Seattle, WA. Roy completed his B.S. at the University of Iowa and his master's from Washington State University. He was employed by the Environmental Protection Agency for more than 22 years as an environmental scientist. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Papperman Jones '57.
Samuel Williams '58 died June 30, 2004 in Atlanta, GA. Sam's life was multi-faceted—he served in the U.S. Air Force, worked for DuPont as a chemist and earned a Master of Theology degree from Columbia Theological Seminary. He worked for 27 years in the Georgia Governor's Office of Planning and Budget, where he was known for his skills as a facilitator and peacemaker.
Brooks Jackson '71 died January 15, 2005 in Essex, CT. Brooks, a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity in college, was a Senior VP/Manager with Smith Barney for more than 25 years.
James Reid Worsham '84 died April 11, 2005 in Chatham, VA. His WC friends remember his admiration for Dr. Goodfellow, his love of American history and politics, and his passion for lacrosse. Helen Lewis '83 remembers him as "witty, passionate and a true Southern gentleman."
