IN MEMORIAM
Grace Strickland Chaires ’27 died October 11, 2004.
John Edward Jones ’38 died November 11, 2004, in Wilmington,
DE. Reverend Jones graduated from the Temple School of Theology
in 1933. During his lifetime he served as a minister in Cheswold,
Roxana, Brack-Ex, Millsboro, Wilmington and Harrington (Delaware)
and Nanticoke, Berlin and Cambridge (Maryland). He was a strong
advocate of community service and provided counsel to the sick,
the elderly and the imprisoned. He was also chaplain for the
Del-Mar-Va Firemen’s Association.
Andrew Sherrard ’39 died November 3, 2003. He served in
the Navy during WWII and was an attorney in Maryland.
James Svec ’48 died December 30, 2004, in Towson, MD.
A KA, he completed his bachelor’s degree after service
in the Navy during WWII. He worked for many years as an accountant
in Baltimore County’s finance office.
Mary (Molly) Buckingham Thompson ’49 died November 11,
2004, in Baltimore. She was a dedicated member of the Philanthropic
Educational Organization. She is survived by her sister, Phyllis
(Bucki) Buckingham Dulin ’47 and brother-in-law, Bill
Dulin ’47.
Charles Haebel ’52 died September 22, 2004. He served
in the Navy during WWII aboard the hospital ship Tranquility
and remained in the reserves for 38 years. After the war, he
worked at the Federal Bureau of Investigation, becoming a special
agent in 1952. After retiring, he became the Director of the
Independent Monitoring Unit of Delaware County Manpower and
taught courses in criminal justice at Penn State University.
Mary Laurent Gibson Swander ’66, 60, died of endometrial
cancer January 4, 2004, in her Potomac, MD, home. She was the
daughter of Helen Schaefer Gibson and the late Daniel Z. Gibson.
Mrs. Swander grew up in Chestertown where her father served
as president of Washington College. She earned a degree in philosophy
from the College in 1966. After an early start in social work,
Mrs. Swander became one of the first female computer programmers
for E. I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. in Wilmington, DE, which
led to positions in retail banking in Louisville, KY, and Bethesda,
MD. At the time of her death, she was working as a realtor with
Long & Foster Realtors. In addition to her mother, Mrs.
Swander is survived by her husband, Bill, a daughter, Rachel
Katharine Nichols, and a son, Daniel Patrick Nichols, both of
San Francisco; a sister, Jillian Clark Gibson of Alexandria,
VA; and a brother, Daniel Douglas Gibson of Ester, AK.
Catherine Sollers Townsend ’80 died November 14, 2004
in Lutherville, MD. After graduation, she worked for several
retail clothiers before managing the Carroll Reed store in Towsontown
Centre. She was an accomplished equestrian and enjoyed playing
tennis.
