Shorewoman Takes Court For Terps
It’s not often that a Division III basketball player completes
her eligibility by playing for a top 25 Division I team, but
that’s exactly what Liz Smith Gilchrest ’04 is doing.
Completing a dual degree program in physics and civil engineering
at the University of Maryland-College Park, Gilchrest made the
Terrapins’ women’s basketball team as a walk-on.
Gilchrest played three years of basketball at Washington and
was one of the top rowers on the College’s nationally
ranked women’s rowing team. She earned All-Centennial
Conference honorable mention recognition for basketball last
year after averaging 13.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
During her three years playing basketball at Washington, she
averaged 14.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Last spring,
she was presented with the College’s Elizabeth “Bo”
Blanchard Memorial Sportsmanship Award for enthusiasm, dedication
and sportsmanship.
Gilchrest saw action in the Terps’ first game of the season,
a 94-74 win over Appalachian State on November 19. She scored
her first two Division I points on a jump shot late in Maryland’s
81-49 win over Monmouth on December 12. Through March 2, Gilchrest
had appeared in ten games in all for Maryland, playing 35 minutes,
scoring 12 points, and grabbing eight rebounds.
Maryland head coach Brenda Frese described Gilchrest as “an
outstanding young lady who brings experience and leadership
to this young team.”
