Fraser Smith's WYPR Interview with Pauline Maier
Pauline Maier, who won the 2011 George Washington Book Prize for Ratification: The People Debate the Constitution, 1787-1788, was honored on campus Friday, September 16. The celebration honoring this year's winner included a book signing, a procession of the flags of the original 13 states and an extraordinary, one night only exhibition of rare documents related to Maryland's ratification of the Constitution. Maier then delivered insightful, funny, and timely remarks about her book and the political process behind the ratification before sitting down for an onstage interview with Adam Goodheart, director of the CV Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. A reception by the 1782 Society in the Underwood Lobby followed where people could examine a rare parchment copy of the US Constitution. With such a great display of historic documents, a little home-state pride, and an enthusiastic audience, the 2011 George Washington Book Prize Celebration was a great evening all around.
