During the Spring Break week, Washington College and carpenters from NeighborWorks Columbus built a house in Columbus, Georgia. The team consisted of 22 students, carpenters, staff and faculty in a project organized by the Columbus, GA Habitat for Humanity affiliate. Washington College students not only forged new friendships and enjoyed a great sense of community, they made a major impact on the lives of the family who will be occupying the house.

After traveling by van for two days, the team meets their recipient family, Melvin "Pops" and Cynthia Kemp, and blows off a little steam.

The foundation is ready for the team to begin building!

Most of the team works to sheath the exterior walls in plywood, while another group finishes building interior walls.

Katie Hughes '12 hangs the WAC banner in what will be the living room window of the house.

Roommates Emily Hordesky '12 and Kelsey Hallowell '12 nail the plywood around a window.

Meanwhile, roommates

The end of the first day—the house has walls and is ready for the roof.

The local merchants of Columbus donate free and discounted activities for the Collegiate Challenge participants. The group took advantage of the discounted bowling offered on the first night.

End of the second day of work—the house has most of its roof and its porch.

Apples to Apples, CatchPhrase, Bananagrams and endless games of Knockout keep the group busy while at home in their gym.

After being delayed for a day and a half by rain, the group feverishly begins work again on Thursday afternoon.

Down below, more of the team get busy installing siding.

After working non-stop through the afternoon, the group attends the closing dinner. Following WAC's show-stopping performance of "Don't Stop Believin'" at the post-dinner talent show,
Tim Danos '10 leads all five schools (roughly 150 participants) in a Taylor Swift singalong.

Ankle-deep mud doesn't slow down the team on Friday. Here, Matt Stiles '11 works to install siding on the side of the house.

The ladies display some muscle in the mud.

The group has a final lunch inside the house and waits out the worst of the storm.
Darnell Parker, of the Office of Student Affairs, catches some much needed Z's, while waiting for the rain to stop.

Mary Fletcher '10 inscribes a bible that will be given to the homeowners at the dedication ceremony of the house.
