Wireless Access (Windows PC)

Unlike previous years, there is no sign-up requirement to use the Wireless network for fall 2006 (assuming you have a valid NetID and password). The process is as follows for a Windows XP computer:

Step 1:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray
Near the clock in the lower right hand corner, locate the Wireless card icon. It looks like a pc with radio waves coming from it but currently has a small red x below it.

Step 2:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray
Double click on it. A list of available networks is shown.

Note: There are no longer multiple networks for “Staff” and “Friends”. There is now simply one network – “WC-Wireless”.

Choose “WC-Wireless” and hit Connect.

Step3:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray

A warning pops up. Choose “Connect Anyway.”

Step 4:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray
It will attempt to connect….

Step 5:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray
Connected!
(Note: the Wireless icon near the clock has lost its red x as well.)

Step 6:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray
Launch any web browser
(in this case Internet Explorer) and you will see this sign in page:

Sign in with your Washington College Netid and Password. Click "Log In". (Note: You are agreeing to WAC "Acceptable Use Policy" which you can read using the provided link.)

Step 7:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray
The Wireless network REQUIRES the use of Popups. You will need to notice the blue “Popup Blocked” line. When you click there, you can choose to “Always allow popups from this site”. You only have 10 seconds to do this or you loose the option.

The Internet Explorer web browser shows the “Popup Blocked” alert box like this:

Step 8:
Locate the wireless icon in your tray
When you accept pop-ups, you will notice the “Logout” window at the bottom. You will be required to logout or on a public access machine the next user after you will be authenticated as you on our system.

Any visiting vendors will not be able to use Wireless at this time. They must use a Lan Cable to connect. This process will change further for the spring 2007 sessions.

There may be certain ports that are not available on the Wireless network at this time, so selected functionality may not be available. (Example, having a wireless computer share data to another computer across the wireless network.)
