Exploring the Waterways
Kent County by Kayak
Come explore the pristine rivers, creeks, and streams of Maryland’s Eastern Shore with your fellow students on this four day kayak program. The first two days will be spent exploring the Chester River, home to bald eagles, Atlantic blue crabs, and some of the most unspoiled scenery in the Chesapeake region. The second half of the trip will feature a two-day, one-night camping excursion at Sassafras Natural Resource Management Area, a 1,000 acre nature preserve that features spectacular views of the Sassafras River. During the overnight program, participants will explore the sandy beaches of the Sassafras, pull seine nets to sample marine life, paddle through wetland habitats, fish with a hook and line, cook over an open fire, and view the upper Bay from atop the 70 foot cliffs lining the lower Sassafras River. Along the way, local guides will provide students with information about the history of Kent County and its many local waterways. Of course, there will also be plenty of time to relax and meet new friends. This program is limited to 12 participants, first come, first served.
