Israel: Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
For students with an interest in Israel, a program of study can be arranged through the NYC office of this top Israeli University. Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is the only Israeli university created to fulfill a unique nation-building mandate: to develop the Negev, its land and its people. International students are offered the chance to experience first hand why BGU is known to be the #1 choice university for Israeli undergraduates. You will have the chance to experience the real Israel, and enjoy a summer, semester or year living like a real Israeli student.
The Center for International Student Program (CISP), in addition to offering you the chance to benefit from the tremendous wealth of academic potential at the University, takes you on numerous trips throughout the semester and year. The small size of the Program allows for more individual attention, and the staff is more than happy to assist students in any way possible.
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev is located in the city of Beer Sheva—the capital of the Negev region. The Negev itself is part of an awe-inspiring desert that stretches from Egypt through the southern part of Israel to Jordan and Saudi Arabia. The city of Beer Sheva is one of the four largest cities in Israel. It lies between the southern Negev desert and the cultivated fields of the biblical lands of Judah to the north. Beer Sheva is a city of great historical significance, where thousands of years ago it offered the junction between East and West. Beer Sheva is a city that offers a glimpse at the ‘real’ Israel. It is attracting large hi-tech companies to the region, and the city also hosts shopping malls, movie theaters, an internationally renowned chamber orchestra, local theaters and a light opera company, cafes, restaurants, pubs, numerous student dance clubs and discos.
BGU attracts first class, dynamic faculty from all over Israel, and indeed, the world. The Center for International Student Program offers several concentrations in fields where BGU has particular strengths. These concentrations are designed to highlight areas in which students can find numerous courses available through the CISP, as well as fields in which students might wish to take internships and/or independent research classes.
Opportunities for Experiential Learning:
Volunteer work is encouraged as it is in keeping with the goal of the Center for Student Programs. It helps the students to foster more diverse friendships, as well as facilitating overall integration into Israeli society. Through community service, students can delve into other dimensions and cultures that make up the diverse melting pot of Israeli society.
Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and Beer Sheva are located in the desert, far enough away from the areas in which violence and terrorism have occurred. Still, security and the safety of our students are our foremost priorities.
Students live in the on-campus dormitories which are located within one or two minutes walk from their classes, the sports center, the library, and the center of the University. The dormitories are patrolled constantly and there is an active and visible Security Division, which is responsible for security throughout the University. Security personnel are available and on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Students receive a security orientation upon arrival at the University and receive regular updates on security in Israel and the region. They also meet frequently with the Director of the Center for International Student Programs for updated security briefings.
