Start Smart 2014

Want to set your course for academic success?

Then join us early for Start Smart!

Start Smart is a new pre-orientation program offered by the Office of Academic Skills (OAS) for incoming freshmen students with disabilities. This program focuses on providing students with academic skills, information, and access to resources to help with a smooth transition to college. This is also a great time for incoming freshman students to get their bearings and set their course for future academic success.

Who?      Incoming freshmen students who have a documented disability

What?     A pre-orientation program focused on the following topics:

  • self-advocacy
  • learning profiles
  • using accommodations
  • academic resources
  • managing time/priorities
  • setting goals/establishing habits
  • study strategies
  • assistive technology (Read & Write Gold, iPads, apps, etc.)
  • digital books

Plus! There will be organized evening events allowing students to get to know other pre-orientation freshman students in a relaxed, social setting and several follow-up events during the Fall semester to provide additional support.

Participants will be allowed to move into their assigned residence hall two days early (Tuesday, August 19th from 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m in Hodson Hall).

Where?   Washington College, Miller Library, 2nd Floor*

When?     Tuesday, August 19th  12:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.*
                 Wednesday, August 20th   8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.*   

Cost?        $75 (meals, housing, and events); billed to the student’s account and can be paid online


Space is limited, so register early!


*These times include group meals. Time/place for extra activities/events TBD.
