C.V. Starr Center for the

Study of the American Experience

Jean Wortman

Assistant Director

Jean Corrie Wortman brings to the Starr Center many years of experience in museum education and the public humanities. She most recently served as Program Officer at the Maryland Humanities Council where she administered the major grant program, coordinated the Maryland Center for the Book, and developed public programs that used the humanities to spur reflection and civic dialogue on critical issues. In affiliation with the Smithsonian Institution, Wortman led Maryland’s Museum on Main Street program, helping small museums build institutional capacity and develop as agents for community building.  Working in non-profit administration, she has designed and implemented a wide range of public humanities programs for diverse audiences. A college internship at Mystic Seaport Museum sparked an interest in maritime history; subsequently Wortman found her way to positions at some of the country’s leading maritime museums. She has a degree in American Studies from Lafayette College and an MA in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program.
