Bevin Buchheister

Class of 1988
Major/Minor: International Relations

Bevin Ann (Boyle) Buchheister, J.D., (W.C. class of ’88), is the Maryland Director of the Chesapeake Bay Commission, a tri-state legislative Commission that works on all aspects of policy to restore the Bay, whether it involves air land or water.

In 2011, Bevin convened a wide community of stakeholders to draft and pass the Fertilizer Use Act of 2011, one of the most comprehensive fertilizer laws in the country which was aimed at reducing excess nutrient flow to the Chesapeake Bay. She currently works on manure-to-energy issues.

Bevin earned an International Relations degree from Washington College, where she also rowed crew for three years and was President of the German Club. She earned a J.D. from University of Baltimore ’97 and worked for four years as Chief of Staff for the House Environmental Matters Committee in the Md. House of Delegates. Prior to that she represented victims of domestic violence as a staff attorney at the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County YWCA.

She and her college sweetheart, fellow WC (not WAC!) alumnus, Chris Buchheister, ’85, just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Chris served for 20 years as a Naval Aviator and is now a yachtbroker in Annapolis. The have three boys; Ahren who is a musician, Conrad who is a 2012 WC grad in History and Education, and Aiden who is in middle school. They have a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, live in Annapolis and race sailboats for fun.

On Monday, March 16th, Bevin ’88 P’12 and Chris ’85 P’12 Buchheister came back to campus to speak about their experiences at WC, their paths after graduation and their current careers.

Chris pursued a rewarding career in the Navy that took him from Virginia to locations such as Hawaii and Antarctica. Bevin is the Maryland Director of the Chesapeake Bay Commission and focuses on policy making that works to restore the Chesapeake Bay. She has written three bills that were made into law and just recently ran for Mayor of Annapolis. Bevin and Chris are a dynamic pair who loved their Washington College experience and are excited to share stories, insight and advice with students.
