Ruth Farfel

Class of 2013
Major/Minor
Sociology

Her experiences with Habitat for Humanity and the Service Council have exposed Ruth Farfel ’13 to social and economic injustices; her coursework as sociology major has given her the tools to do something about them.

“I’ve come to realize the inequality we have in our country—how some people have so many resources and opportunities, and some don’t,” she said.” I’m learning about problems. I am talking about social issues and motivating others to do something to help.”

Originally from Baltimore, Ruth said she chose Washington College because of the small class sizes and the prospect of developing close relationships with her professors. Her experience has certainly lived up to her expectations; she is currently taking her third sociology class with her mentor, associate professor of sociology Ryan Kelty. “I can go to him for advice anytime,” she says.

In addition to her coursework, Ruth is co-chair for the local committee of the Service Council, historian for Cleopatra’s Sisters (an organization focusing on women’s issues and diversity on campus), a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and a tutor in sociology. The Service Council hosts a number of community activities throughout the year, including events with retirees at Heron Point, a Walk for the Homeless in Washington, DC, and tutoring at the local middle school. Last summer, she interned with the Casey Cares Foundation in Baltimore, which provides programs for critically ill children and their families.

Ruth said her volunteer experiences have inspired her to pursue a career in social work and to share her enthusiasm for community outreach with her fellow students. “When I undertake a service project, I want to know who I’m helping and why it’s so important. It’s about changing someone’s life. But it’s even bigger than that. Community service shapes who we are as individuals and impacts the entire community.”
