From 1977 through 1978, John served as a personal assistant to Steny H. Hoyer, then President of the Maryland Senate and also served as aide de camp to Acting Governor Blair Lee, III of Maryland. At the conclusion of the 1978 gubernatorial campaign in Maryland, John briefly served the Maryland General Assembly as a consultant before joining the Air Line Pilots Association in Washington, D.C. as Assistant to the Director for Legislative Affairs.
From 1981 through 1986, John served Congressman Hoyer as his Legislative Director and Associate Staff to the House Committee on Appropriations of the U.S. House of Representatives. In that role, John had a variety of political and governmental responsibilities working closely with Members of Congress from both parties and the Leadership of the House.
In 1987, John joined the Washington, D.C. law firm of Patton Boggs, LLP as the youngest partner in the firm’s history and he served as the Managing Partner of the Baltimore Office and Director of their firm’s branch offices in Denver, Dallas, Greensboro, Raleigh, Seattle and Baltimore. In addition, John sat on the Management and Executive Committees of the firm and represented a number of major corporate, sports, and non-profit clients.
Maryland Governor Parris Glendening nominated John to be Chairman of the Maryland Stadium Authority in January of 1995 and the Maryland Senate confirmed him. As Chairman of the eight-member authority, John oversaw Oriole Park at Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles, PSINet Stadium adjacent to Oriole Park, home to the NFL Ravens, the Baltimore Convention Center, construction of the Ocean City Convention Center expansion, and the establishment of the Montgomery County Conference Center. He was successful in luring a National Football League team- the NFL Ravens- to Baltimore and has been honored by several professional business and civic groups as a result. Chairmanship of the Authority is a high profile, voluntary position with responsibility for approximately 100 employees and close to $1 billion in assets. John served in this capacity through 1998.
In June 1998, John joined Legg Mason Wood Walker, Inc. as the Managing Director of its Sports, Media and Entertainment Group. Mr. Moag led the nation’s only investment banking group focused solely on infrastructure financing, mergers and acquisitions, private placement of equity, and the public markets in the sports, media, and entertainment industry. The highly successful practice was involved in transactions totaling in the billions of dollars.
In 2001, John left Legg Mason to start his own company: Moag & Company, L.L.C. Moag & Company’s services include mergers and acquisitions, private placement of equity and debt, IPO consultation, financial advisory and venue financing. As Chairman and CEO, Mr. Moag and his team have handled a number of high profile transactions involving sports teams, sports entertainment media, sports facilities and sports-related companies.
John has been a member of the Washington College Board of Visitors and Governors since 1989. He has served as Vice Chair of the Board and Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee. He was named an emeritus member of the Board in 2008. He serves as a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland at Baltimore. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Union Memorial Hospital Foundation, Inc. John also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Chesapeake Region 2012 Olympic Coalition.
With some frequency, John lectures on the sports industry and has published on a number of occasions. He has served with the United States delegations to Nicaragua and El Salvador to monitor democratic initiatives, to Vietnam to consider the trade embargo, and to Germany to monitor an election in Bavaria.
John is married to the former Margaret McManus and has two children: Lauren McManus Moag and Alexandra Swanson Moag.
