Class of 2011
A Fashionable Internship
Rhiana Wells ‘11 has always been inspired by the colorful clothing of the Lilly Pulitzer design company. The fabrics are so bright and fun that “you’re happy when you wear it, and that makes everyone else happy, too,” she exclaims.
Rhiana’s personal interest in Lilly apparel blossomed into career aspirations when she decided to apply for a company internship.
For years, she wanted to be a part of the Lilly line, though college seniors were typically preferred over underclassmen for the coveted internships. Undaunted, Rhiana went to the Center for Career Development for some help in revamping and submitting her résumé to the clothing company.
Soon the junior English major was invited to spend the summer at company headquarters in King of Prussia, PA.
Rhiana is quick to cite the Career Center and her advisor, Professor Alisha Knight, for their assistance in securing the Lilly internship. Rhiana will receive academic credit for the work, truly making this a practical and academic learning experience. “I wouldn’t have been able to do it without [the WC staff],” Rhiana emphasizes. “They really wanted this for me.”
At Lilly, Rhiana’s focus is marketing. She helps maintain the company’s online presence, and is also in charge of compiling stories for the interns’ blog. “I really use my writing skills in everything I do,” she says.
Bigger projects are being entrusted to Rhiana: she was asked to create an entire media library; research advertising in the current market and compile it all into a single 10-page report; and present press kits to the heads of the company. “It’s a big task, but that’s really exciting for me… they’re trusting me with a lot of things.”
Rhiana is excited to be where she is, and hopes to continue working in the fashion industry after graduation. “It’s hard not to have fun promoting something you love.”
