Speed, precision and quick thinking make for an exceptional math major, as well as a karate champion with nine World Titles.
Joshua Kahan ‘11 has been training in the martial arts for 17 years. He got his start at Victory Martial Arts in Columbia, MD, where he obtained his 2nd and 3rd degree black belts and competed locally for several years. In 2004, he began competing in NASKA competitions all over North America, where he won his world titles. He applied that same dedication and focus to his academic studies, choosing a path that would help him pursue a career in engineering. A mathematics major with minors in physics and computer science, Josh is continuing his education in structural engineering through a master’s program at Johns Hopkins University.
Joshua credits professors in the sciences and mathematics division with helping him bring his dreams closer to fruition. “Sitting down and talking with my advisors really helped lead me in the right direction,” Joshua says. “Professor Lobo, an actual engineer, was very important in helping me devise a senior thesis focused on structural mechanics that would help me prepare for my post-grad studies. He also suggested grad school programs,” said Josh.
In addition to his studies and karate—he teaches classes at a gym in Pasadena—on campus, Josh was active in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served as rush chairman and grand treasurer of the Greek organization. Josh was also inducted into the prestigious honor society, Phi Beta Kappa, in recognition of his academic achievements.
Reflecting on his time at Washington College, Josh explains, “I wanted to go to a small school because I loved the idea of small classes where you actually know your professors. I got out of it exactly what I wanted.”
