Robert Savidge

Engineer III / Project Manager with the Anne Arundel County Government
Class of 2001, Environmental Studies with a minor in Business Management

The swimmers were and are a great group of people that I’m still in touch with. And Coach Kim Lessard did a spectacular job at keeping us all together and one community.

How has your liberal arts education influenced you? How do you apply your LAE in your current career?

My LAE has given me a broad and diverse background that gives me a lot of flexibility as to what kind of jobs I could apply to and what type of career I could seek. That same diverse education and background has opened up my perception to appreciate the arts, history, and ethics rather than simply the science or engineering. I feel this has allowed me to work with people with all different views and experiences.

WC also helped to build an appreciation for community - both our surrounding Chestertown and also the Chesapeake Bay.

Who was your favorite faculty/staff member? Story?

I have a number of favorites. Professor Michael Harvey (business management) and Vicky Sawyer are at the top of my list. Professor Harvey fully embraced the liberal arts mentality by incorporating the Bay, our environment, history, and ethics into his classes. He also was excellent at getting students to think critically, and reflect upon our own biases so we could challenge them internally. Both he and Vicky Sawyer were excellent at allowing students to meet their potential and achieve their goals and dreams, both inside and outside of the classroom. Vicky was always there to support us as we plotted our future.

What is your favorite Washington College memory?

Many memories. What stands out is the atmosphere and community that the College provided. The summer classes provided by the professors were also excellent.

Did your Senior Capstone Experience (or thesis project) have a major influence on your future career or your personal growth? If so, please explain what your SCE entailed and how it influenced who or where you are today.

It did have a major impact. I wrote my thesis on Campus Ecology - how to create a green campus, and later I worked for the City of Annapolis as their Sustainability Coordinator for almost 7 years.
