An Introduction to the Culture of Brazil - POSTPONED
Mondays, February 1 – March 7 (six weeks)
4:15 – 5:30 pm
Brazil is the largest country of South America, equivalent in size to the continental United States, with a population of over 200 million. Its economy is the 8th largest in the world as of 2015. The country hosted the soccer World Cup competition in the summer of 2015 and in 2016 will host the Summer Olympics. Thus it is a major player on the world stage. The purpose of this course is to introduce the participants to the history and culture of South America’s largest country. In addition to an overview of the history of Brazil, we will focus on such issues as race and gender, as well as on religion, popular culture, (especially music and film) and on the national ecology, particularly concerns about the destruction of the Amazon rain forest.
