Douglas Peterson

Class of 1990
Major/Minor: International Studies with a minor in Economics

I was able, thanks to Junior Fellows and the contacts provided by Dr. Malone (Econ), to interview a former presidential candidate, the Government’s Press Secretary, and Editors of the major Newspapers, among others. All as a rising undergraduate senior!

How has your liberal arts education influenced you? How do you apply your LAE in your current career?

I regularly use my liberal arts education to craft policy statements, official correspondence, and other daily writing tasks. Additionally, I found my Int’l Studies education particularly helpful in my last tour, on the staff of the Strategy Division for US European Command, where I was involved in the re-working of the overall US military’s steady-state strategy within the European theater.

Who was your favorite faculty/staff member? Story?

Mike Davenport, my rowing coach. He tracked me down on campus, told me that my height might prove useful in rowing, and to come down to the boathouse to see what it was all about. Four years of crew resulted, and many life lessons in competition, organization and team work.

What is your favorite Washington College memory?

Working for Constance Stuart Larrabee, who employed me for yard work, dog walking, and other odds and ends. Miss Larrabee was full of anecdotes about her years in South Africa, and her experiences in WWII. Her sense of humor was legendary, as was her love of WC.

Did your Senior Capstone Experience (or thesis project) have a major influence on your future career or your personal growth? If so, please explain what your SCE entailed and how it influenced who or where you are today. Alternately please share Internships, fellowships, Society of Junior Fellows project experiences.

Junior Fellows enabled a summer in Ghana, where I completed a study on the recently completed free election held the year previous to my trip. I was able, thanks to Junior Fellows and the contacts provided by Dr. Malone (Econ), to interview a former presidential candidate, the Government’s Press Secretary, and Editors of the major Newspapers, among others. All as a rising undergraduate senior!
