Some thrushes, like the American Robin, are very familiar birds because they can be found foraging in large groups on grassy lawns. Other thrushes, like Bicknell’s, are more secretive, remaining in the understory of mature forests. Thrushes typically eat insects and berries and nest in cups made from small twigs, leaves, and dead grass.

The Northern Bobwhite is the only native resident quail in Maryland. They are a stocky, short bird that prefers to run on the ground. During the winter they form coveys that can include as many as 20 individuals. The males make a distinctive bob-WHITE call during the summer. -
Generally small and drab birds, sparrows can be secretive and difficult to identify. They usually feed in seeds in the winter and insects in the summer. Most sparrows (especially Towhees) will scratch and kick on the ground to find food. -
Shrikes are unique songbirds in that they hunt small vertebrates including mammals, birds, and reptiles. They frequently will hang their prey on thorns for later consumption. They are usually found in open fields, hedgerows, and wood edges.
