The students had the opportunity to hike seven peaks in the park (three of them just for fun!) and explore diverse terrestrial communities including hardwood, boreal, alpine and lowland birch forests as well as a bouncy peat bog complete with carnivorous plants. -
We rose early on our last day (3:45AM) to see the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain, reputed to be the first point in the United States to see the rays of the rising sun, and to begin our long drive home to Maryland. -
The Bermuda Environment (ENV/BIO 221) summer course is cross listed in both environmental studies and biology. It investigates the complex ecology of the Bermuda islands, the impact that human habitation have on their natural history, and methods of addressing current environmental concerns. Major areas of study include coral reef and mangrove community ecology, fisheries and tourism impacts. The course is offered alternate summers and is taught by Donald Munson, Joseph H. McLain Professor of Environmental Studies and Professor of Biology.
Coastal Maine Marine Ecology
Coastal Maine is a wonderful place to investigate marine ecology with kelp and barnacle crowded coastal cliffs, tide pools packed with fascinating marine invertebrates and an abundance of coastal and marine vertebrates including bald eagles, porpoises and seals.
For the first time in a decade of offering this course, we caught lobsters in the intertidal waters. This one looks like he is having a bad day “NO, not the pot, please not tha!” (No worries, this was National Park waters, so all the critters went back where we found them.)
