Part of a larger group of birds called “wading birds,” herons and egrets usually are found in shallow water spearing fish, frogs, or other small animals in the water. The Eastern Shore has many species of herons and egrets, but the most recognizable is the Great Blue Heron.

A unique species of bird, the Brown Creeper belongs to a scientific family all its own. Brown Creepers are found in mature woods and climb the trunks of trees in rising spirals. -
Members of the family Paridae, chickadees and titmice are small perching birds with strong feet. They also have short thin bills used for gleaning insects and seeds. Both nest in cavities and will sometimes use bird boxes. -
Nightjars are most active in the evenings and at night. They tend to have long pointed wings and stocky bodies. They have fairly large heads, with enormous mouths for catching insects during flight.
