David O. Stewart, the 2009-2010 Hodson Trust-John Carter Brown Fellow, spent the summer of 2010 writing his book American Emperor: Aaron Burr’s Challenge to Jefferson’s America at the C.V Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. He returned to Washington College and the C.V Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience in celebration of the release of his new book and talk about Aaron Burr at a wine and cheese reception.

Acclaimed historian Richard Beeman, Senior Fellow of the C.V Starr Center and the Institute for Religion, Politics and Culture, and winner of the 2010 George Washington Book Prize, continued his lecture series entitled “Inventing a Nation” with his talk exploring the creation of the Bill of Rights. -
Illustrator and writer Maira Kalman opened the American Pictures Series 2012 by exploring a haunting photo by Diane Arbus. Kalman has written and illustrated more than a dozen books for children, including Looking at Lincoln (2012), Ooh-la-la-Max in Love (2001), What Pete Ate (2001), and 13 WORDS (2010), a collaboration with Lemony Snicket. Kalman’s books for adults include And the Pursuit of Happiness (2010), and an illustrated version of Strunk and White’s classic The Elements of Style (2005). The American Pictures Series includes four lectures at the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. -
As part of the Goldstein Program in Public Affairs, Dan Holler ‘05 spoke in the Alumni House about getting a job as Communications Director for the Heritage Foundation, a prominent DC think tank. working in professional politics or advocacy. Afterwards, he gave a public lecture on the Republican presidential primaries in Hynson Lounge entitled “Breaking all the Rules: The GOP Primary.”
