James Hand ’60 returned to Washington College to talk about his decade of work with NASA’s Project Apollo. As a NASA scientist working first at Kollsman Instrument Corporation in New York, and then at the MIT/Instrumentation Laboratory in Cambridge, Mass., Hand helped develop guidance, navigation, and control systems for the Apollo Command and Lunar Modules. He participated in the first lunar landing mission as part of the engineering support center at Johnson Space Center in Houston.

David O. Stewart, the 2009-2010 Hodson Trust-John Carter Brown Fellow, spent the summer of 2010 writing his book American Emperor: Aaron Burr’s Challenge to Jefferson’s America at the C.V Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. He returned to Washington College and the C.V Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience in celebration of the release of his new book and talk about Aaron Burr at a wine and cheese reception. -
With the requisite lectures in the natural sciences under their belt, Chesapeake Semester students started off on their second Journey that would last 10 days and take them from the remote and peaceful forests of Shenandoah National Park to the crowded boardwalk of Ocean City with stops at the marsh swamps of Black Water National Wildlife Refuge and the coastal bays of Chincoteague and Assateague Island National Wildlife Refuge. -
The Center for Environment & Society teamed up with WC-ALL to bring Natalie Cely, Ambassador of Ecuador, to a special luncheon where she spoke about the Yasuní-ITT Initiative, an effort to protect an expanse of wilderness and the culture of indigenous peoples from multinational corporate oil interests.
