The internationally acclaimed lecture on “The Power of Procrastination” by Dr. Jorge Cham came to Washington College starting the festivities of the Hispanic Heritage Month 2013, and bringing together from science to art to Spanish majors.
Framed by the liberal arts philosophy and approach to undergraduate education, Washington College’s Education Department enjoys a rich tradition of preparing students for teacher certification at the elementary and secondary levels. Graduates of the “Ed Block,” a rigorous immersion program of theoretical, philosophical, and methodological coursework, fieldwork, “Academy” teaching simulations with video analysis, and a 100-day internship teaching in a Maryland Professional Development School, go on to do meaningful, award-winning work as teaching faculty, administrative leaders, policy advocates, curriculum specialists, academic researchers, and museum educators. This slide-laden manifesto by illustrator Robbi Behr and writer Matthew Swanson (of the small press Idiots’Books) discusses the virtues of subscription-based art distribution, the power of selfless self-promotion, the advantages of collaboration, the pleasures of artistic freedom, the importance of saying “yes,” and the unquestionable merits of doggedness. Also included are musings on luck (what it is, whether it can be made, and how to go about getting more of it) and impatience (how it might not be as useless as we are often told).
