Date: 6:00pm EDT September 19, 2013As part of its 2013-2014 Premier Artists lineup, the Washington College Concert Series, together with the C.V. Starr Center for the American Experience, present a FREE Book Talk and Performance by author and musician Stephen Wade in Decker Theater.
Author and Musician Stephen Wade will be talking about his new book, The Beautiful Music All Around Us, while he sings and plays his banjo. Free and open to the public, this event is co-sposnored by the Washington College Concert Series (Premier Artists Series) and the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. It is also part of the 2013 Chestertown Book Festival.
The book, The Beautiful Music All Around Us, is the product of nearly two decades of field research across the American South during which Stephen tracked down the communities, families, performers, and others who had witnessed or participated in landmark field recordings made in the 1930s and 1940s through the Library of Congress. The stories he has to tell about this research are a rich blend of music history, especially the evolution of traditional tunes as they pass through the hands of creative individuals, and deeply moving backstories of the mostly unsung performers whose playing and singing is preserved on the recordings. He is a dynamic, deeply informed presenter whose work would speak to ethnomusicologists by virtue of his ingenious fieldwork, to musicologists interested in American roots music, and to the general public by virtue of the great human interest stories he has uncovered.
