Campus Sustainability

A Message from the Student Government Association

The actions of every student add up to make a huge difference on campus. This is why it is important to make a conscious effort to make choices that will be environmentally friendly.

Before You Get Here

  • Buy compact fluorescent or LED bulbs for any lamps in your dorm
  • Choose energy efficient appliances
  • Get a Brita filter instead of using disposable plastic water bottles
  • Bring reusable plates, cups, and utensils rather than disposable ones
  • Purchase items used so new materials do not have to be manufactured- this also saves you money
  • Coordinate with your roommate about who brings what
  • Buy local instead of shipping items

Moving In

  • Pack items in reusable containers
  • Recycle cardboard boxes from new appliances or TVs in the recycling found in each dorm
  • Use newspaper to pack breakable objects rather than Styrofoam packing peanuts

When You Are Here

  • Recycle bottles, cans, papers, cardboard, etc. in the bins down the hall
  • Recycle batteries at the Help Desk of OIT in William Smith basement
  • Be conscious of taking shorter showers to conserve water
  • Turn off your air conditioning, lights, TV, etc. when you are not in the room
  • Unplug appliances such as chargers, microwaves, printers, lamps, etc. when they are not in use
  • Print papers double sided
  • Sign up to have your bills paid online and to see your bank statements as e-mails rather than paper
  • Bring a reusable mug when getting coffee or tea at Java George
  • Take a reusable water bottle to the gym
  • Only wash your clothes if it is a full load
  • Buy local food—there is a farmers market every Saturday in the fall and spring
  • Participate in efforts for sustainability on campus such as joining Student Environmental Alliance
  • Use natural cleaning supplies—diluted baking soda and vinegar is an effective cleaner
  • Chestertown is walkable—bike or walk around campus and town instead of driving
  • Bring reusable bags when shopping at local stores
